The real story of milk begins long before it reaches the glass—and continues long after.
    Cows, like humans, produce milk for their calves after a nine-month pregnancy. Only about half—females—will go on to produce milk. What happens next is not inevitable—it is designed.

Newborns are separated

Calves are typically separated from their mothers shortly after birth and raised apart, thereby preventing maternal bonding and redirecting milk and early care into the production system.

Male calves have no place

Because they do not produce milk, male calves are typically sold into the meat system (including veal), with no built-in future.

Bred for maximum output

Cows are selectively bred and managed for high milk production, treated as production assets — resulting in average lifespans of just 5–7 years instead of their natural 20–25.

Resulting cost savings help keep milk inexpensive

Milk stays affordable through scale, efficiency, and policy support—but also because these outcomes are normalized, not priced as responsibilities.

Retirement is not treated as a sentimental add-on. A standing portion of revenue is reserved while cows are still producing so long-life care is planned into the economics from the beginning.

This is not a refinement of the existing system. It is a fundamentally different way of structuring dairy.

Calf–cow bonding systems

Calves remain with their mothers, allowing natural bonding, nursing, and early development — with long-term health prioritized over maximum extraction.

Heritage breed propagation

Traditional breeds are preserved for resilience, longevity, and disease resistance — not pushed toward unnatural levels of production.

Ethnoveterinary care

Cow/calf health is supported through traditional herbal care — reducing dependence on purely industrial treatment models.

Lower extraction, lower stress

Milk production is moderated, accepting lower yield in exchange for reduced stress, greater well-being, and longer natural lifespans.

True cost of milk

Milk is priced to reflect the real cost of ethical care — not made artificially cheap through hidden cruelty.

Oxen economics

Male calves are not treated as surplus, but raised and trained as oxen — creating long-term value through work, utility, and dignified purpose within the farm economy.

Retirement farms

Care does not end when production declines; older cows are supported through dedicated retirement provision, with lifelong responsibility built into the model.

Climate accountability

We are designing this model to lower all four: enteric methane, manure methane, land use, and lifetime emissions. This is not a climate free pass. It is a commitment to measure the real footprint of ethical dairy and improve the system where critics will look first.

A deeper tradition behind this work

This endeavor is rooted in Vedic Sages' understanding of cows.

Across 5,000-year-old Vedic literature, the cow (gau-mātā) is honored as a mother for the life-sustaining nourishment of her milk, regarded as a foundational food supporting both physiological and cognitive development. Classical texts describe it as enhancing medhya (intellect), sāttva (clarity), and ojas (vitality).

As such, she is regarded as especially worthy of protection (go-rakṣā), indispensable to human health and spiritual civilization, and—by virtue of her complete dependence on human care—morally diagnostic: how she is treated reflects the moral and spiritual condition of human society.

Scientific perspective
Current scientific understanding

Modern science offers a partial parallel: milk is a complex biological matrix containing casein micelles, whey proteins, lactose, minerals, and membrane-bound lipids whose nutritional and functional properties depend on both composition and structure. Particular attention has focused on the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), rich in phospholipids and sphingomyelin, along with bioactive proteins and peptides released during digestion and fermentation.

Milk is also not compositionally fixed. Breed, stage of lactation, pasture intake and supplemental feed, udder health and somatic cell count, heat and stress load, and industrial processing can all shift the milk lipidome, proteome, metabolome, micronutrient profile, and supramolecular architecture.

What we want to test

We want to test whether the specific conditions of ethical dairy—pasture, calf contact, lower chronic stress, longer-lived cows, and gentler handling and processing—produce measurable differences in milk, and whether those differences matter biologically.

Milk composition

How pasture, breed, lactation stage, and lower-stress care reshape the milk lipidome and proteome — omega-3/omega-6 balance, alpha-linolenic acid, CLA, phospholipids, sphingomyelin, casein and whey fractions, and other bioactive components.

Welfare markers

How calf contact, housing, heat load, and chronic stress influence somatic cell count, cortisol and cortisone, inflammatory markers, oxidative stability, and compositional stability.

Processing effects

How homogenization, pasteurization, fermentation, cream separation, and storage alter fat-globule size, MFGM integrity, phospholipid retention, protein structure, digestibility, and broader bioactivity.

Human outcomes

Whether these differences appear in digestive tolerance, postprandial glucose and lipemic responses, inflammatory and immune markers, gut-microbiome dynamics, and neurocognitive measures of attention, affect regulation, and stress reactivity — and whether they meaningfully correspond to medhya, sāttva, and ojas.

Drawing on a decade as a monk, along with training in engineering systems, Ayurveda, and farming, he leads the model's vision, partnerships, and long-term development.

How this work is funded

We are asking for your support to help build a different kind of dairy—one organized around care, responsibility, and lifelong accountability.

We recognize that this support comes from hard-earned resources. If you choose to contribute, it is our responsibility to use those funds with care, clarity, and integrity. The outline here shows how that responsibility is carried in practice.

10% of earned revenue is reserved from the outset for cows’ retirement and long-life care.

Funding sources

This work is supported through a mix of earned revenue, mission-aligned philanthropy, grants, partnerships, and other aligned support.

Over time, the goal is to strengthen the earned side of the model without hiding the real cost of lifelong care.

How funds are used

Gifts may be directed to specific streams—research, production, economics, or public communication—or left undesignated to support the core farm systems on which the model depends: herd care, pasture systems, infrastructure and upkeep, and farm labor.

Restricted gifts are allocated 82% to the designated purpose and 18% to core farm systems.

Donor policy

We welcome support from people and institutions aligned with the mission. Donations do not determine animal standards, research conclusions, or public claims.

When support is restricted to a particular project or stream, we will say so clearly.

Reporting & updates

We are committed to making the work legible: what is being built, what is being tested, where support is going at a high level, and what remains unresolved.
